Hidden Gems of Maui: Lesser-known Whale Watching Sites for an Epic Adventure

Although Dive Maui is well-known for its whale viewing chances, other locations go under the radar where the whales are so near you could swear they are waving hello. Most people swarm to Lahaina or Ma’alaea on excursions, but why not choose the less-traveled path and see a different, maybe even mystical angle?

Think of walking to the rocky Makena Beach. Imagine this: light breezes tousling your hair while you stand scanning the waves with sand between your toes. Less people mean the only sound you will hear is the call of the ocean and, when a whale breaches, the collective gasp of a few awe-struck fellow travelers. Meeting an elderly sea dog at Makena last year, she said, “These whale antics are the best show on earth.” And I would say that is really accurate.

Then there is the little treasure hidden away from the typical honky-tonk: Ho’okipa Beach Park. Not just a great area to see whales playing in the waves, but also well-known for its gigantic swells bringing surfers from all around the world. It’s like seeing your favorite musicians perform in a small dive bar—personal and unexpected.

Look outside and beyond the standard boats and trips. Another great approach to go close without the hassle is kayaking rental. Just you, the open sea, possibly a friendly humpback or two. Imagine kayaking and then sensing the magical presence of a big whale gliding under your small ship. Right? Goosebump-worthy?

Don’t miss Olowalu either. Not only do the whales have a field day here. Its strategic curvature and coral-rich coastlines seem to attract not only these amazing species but also an entire aquatic life. Spending the night camping? Stay late and hear the enigmatic sounds of our enormous ocean companions in the calm nighttime air.

Not to overlook La Perouse Bay with its rocky coastline either. Whale viewing is personal and rather different here among old lava flows. Your grandmother would claim that this area has character, and boy she would be correct. Should the whales refuse to show up on schedule, it’s also a great venue for honing your high-seas pirate voice.

So next time you’re on Maui, stray from the road less taken for an unforgettable trip. After all, the unique corners of this magical island have a peculiar way of drawing even timid sea life to perform.
